Union Budget 2025: Expectations for the Education Sector

Government likely to boost funding for digital learning, teacher training, and school infrastructure as NEP 2020 targets approach.

Union Budget 2025: Education Sector Awaits Key Announcements

Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will present the Budget 2025-26 today, February 1. The key focus areas are education, healthcare, and tax relief for the middle class. The education sector hopes for a 6% Gross Domestic Product (GDP) allocation to public education. Last year, the government allocated Rs 1.12 lakh crore, a 13% increase from the previous year.

India’s Education Landscape

The finance minister tabled the Economic Survey 2024-25 in Parliament a day before the budget. The report states that India’s school system serves 24.8 crore students across 14.72 lakh schools, with 98 lakh teachers (UDISE+ 2023-24). Government schools make up 69% of the total, enrolling 50% of students and employing 51% of teachers. Private schools account for 22.5%, enrolling 32.6% of students and employing 38% of teachers.

NEP 2020 Targets

The National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 aims to achieve a 100% Gross Enrolment Ratio (GER) by 2030. GER is nearly universal at the primary level (93%). Efforts continue to close gaps at the secondary (77.4%) and higher secondary levels (56.2%). The government is working to ensure inclusive and equitable education for all.

Key Education Initiatives

The government is pushing NEP 2020 objectives through various programs. These include Samagra Shiksha Abhiyan, Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya, DIKSHA, STARS, PARAKH, PM SHRI, ULLAS, and PM POSHAN. These initiatives aim to improve learning outcomes, digital education, and access to quality schooling.

What to Expect in Budget 2025

Education experts expect increased funding for digital learning, infrastructure, teacher training, and scholarships. The budget may also focus on skill development and higher education reforms. The education sector awaits key announcements that could shape the future of learning in India.
