Universal Postal Union’s International Letter Writing Competition 2024

by admin

The Department of Posts is organizing Universal Postal Union (UPU) 2024 – International Letter Writing Competition for young people. The purpose of this competition is primarily to develop composition and subtlety of thought amongst the young people and to contribute to the strengthening of international friendship. School children from 9-15 year are eligible for this letter writing competition.

Schools are requested to organize this competition for interested students in consultation with the Nodal Officers of their respective circles/ regions as was done in 2023. The updated list of nodal officers and all other detailed information is available at http://www.indiapost.gov.in.

Since 1971, the UPU has encouraged young writers aged 9-15 to write letters on a given theme to win exciting prizes. The competition is an excellent way of making young people aware of the important role postal services play in our societies. It develops their skills in composition and their ability to express thoughts clearly. It also fosters enjoyment of letter writing and helps strengthen the bonds of international friendship.

In 2024, participants will be encouraged to reflect on the future of the world under the theme: “At 150 years old, the UPU has served people around the world for more than eight generations. The world has changed enormously since then. Write a letter to future generations about the world you hope they inherit.”

The chosen theme encourages young people to articulate their thoughts on current global challenges and propose innovative solutions. Aligning with the United Nations system’s Common Agenda to deepen solidarity between generations and ensure a liveable planet for the future, the theme allows youths to draw upon the principles of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, providing a framework for their visions of a better world. An international jury compiled by the International Bureau judges the letters and selects the overall winners and candidates that merit a special mention.

International Bureau (IB) of UPU, which is coordinating this competition, shall select the three prize winners amongst the best entries received from each member country of the UPU. The three winners will be awarded Gold, Silver and Bronze medals by the UPU along with a certificate, as well as other prizes to commemorate their win. The gold medalist may also be offered a trip to UPU headquarters in Berne, Switzerland, or an alternative prize to be decided at the sole discretion of UPU.

The Department of Posts shall select best three entries at National level as well as Circle level and will be given cash prizes and certificates. The best entry at the National level shall qualify as the official Indian entry for the UPU level international competition. The language to be used will be English or any of the recognized languages embodied in the 8th Schedule of our Constitution.
