Uttarakhand Pioneers Inclusive and Skill-Based Education for Underprivileged Communities

Uttarakhand is making significant strides in the field of education by implementing innovative initiatives that focus on inclusivity and skill development. The state government, in collaboration with central schemes, is ensuring that children from all sections of society, especially the underprivileged, receive quality education and the necessary resources to build a brighter future.

One of the key initiatives is the Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Residential Hostel, which serves as a safe haven for children who lack parental support or access to education. This government-run hostel provides students with free education, food, uniforms, and books while also focusing on their emotional and mental well-being.

Suhani, a student at the Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Residential Girls’ Hostel in Baniyawala, expressed her gratitude, saying, “I have never felt deprived here. Everything we need, from food to clothing and education, is provided.”

Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has emphasised the importance of improving hostel facilities to ensure that children receive the best possible support. Currently, 19 such hostels are operating in the state, benefiting over 1,000 children and giving them a fresh opportunity to chase their dreams despite financial hardships.

Another transformative program is the Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya (KGBV) Scheme, launched by the central government to promote girls’ education. Uttarakhand has 39 such schools, providing free education, hostel facilities, food, and extracurricular training in sports and music for girls aged 11 to 18. This initiative plays a crucial role in empowering young girls and bridging the gender gap in education.

Students at these schools are thriving. Kumari Megha, a student from KGBV Gangolihat, shared, “We have excellent teachers for all subjects, including computers and sports, which makes learning enjoyable and enriching.”

Skill-Based Learning in PM Shri Schools

To equip students with vocational skills alongside academics, PM Shri Schools and Government Inter-Colleges in Uttarakhand are introducing modern teaching methods and skill-development programs. At present, 531 such schools are operational, with 272 more set to be launched soon. These schools utilize smart classrooms, digital projectors, and interactive teaching techniques to make learning more engaging.

Kamakshi Rawat, a student from PM Shri Atal Utkrisht Vidyalaya in Nainital, highlighted the benefits, saying, “With smart TVs and projectors, our classes have become more interesting and effective.”

Students in these schools also receive training in various vocational fields, preparing them for future employment and self-reliance. Lakhan Singh Bisht, from the same school in Dhanachuli, noted, “Our school has multiple labs, including IT, vocational, multi-skill, and arts labs, which provide us with hands-on learning experiences.”

Rajiv Gandhi Navodaya Vidyalayas: A Strong Educational Foundation

The Rajiv Gandhi Navodaya Vidyalayas are another noteworthy initiative aimed at delivering high-quality education. These schools offer modern teaching facilities and emphasize English language training, helping students compete on national and international platforms.

Uttarakhand successfully brings marginalised children into the mainstream through these educational reforms, ensuring they have access to quality education and skill-based learning. With dedicated efforts from the government and effective policy implementation, the state is shaping a promising future for its youth while contributing to its overall development.
