Atal Bihari Vajpayee, India’s former Prime Minister, passed away yesterday at the AIIMS hospital due to a prolonged illness. The government issued a 7-day mourning as a mark of respect to the BJP stalwart. His funeral is going to be held at Rajghat at 4 PM.
Vajpayee was admitted on June 11 at the AIIMS hospital with a kidney tract infection. The infection was already spread to his kidney. Since he is a diabetic and has only one kidney his condition deteriorated to such an extent that he developed dementia. He was 93 when he passed away. His mortal remains have been taken to his residence in Delhi. Hundreds of well-wishers have gathered at his residence to pay last respects.
His samadhi will be held today at Vijay Ghat, Rajghat at 4 PM, where the citizens can pay their respects to him. A memorial is going to be built to honour the man who had held the position of the Prime Minister thrice. He was the only candidate of BJP to have served a full term as a Prime Minister. Narendra Modi, Manmohan Singh, Sonia Gandhi, Rajnath Singh and many more of his well-wishers have paid respects to him.
Recalling his time with Vajpayee, Home Minister, Rajnath Singh says, “In Atalji’s demise the nation has lost a stalwart who was known for statesmanship and astute leadership. Atalji was a true ‘Ajathshathru’ who had many friends across the political spectrum. He believed in political consensus and his beliefs had consequential effect on Indian politics. I cannot fully imagine my own life without following the footprints that Atalji set. May his soul rest in peace.”
The government announced that the national flag will be flown at half-mast for seven days and a state funeral would be given to Vajpayee. Several state governments have announced holiday in schools, government offices and colleges.
