14 government schools in Delhi is operating with classrooms exceeding 70 students, a clear violation of the Right to Education Act. In light of such events the Delhi Government has found new ways to tackle the issue. Alternate day classes and reduced hours at school have been operational in these schools. Sabhapur School is packed with 123 students in each class. This has ensured that the learning environment is overcrowded and very unlikely.
The Department of Education has submitted an affidavit to the Delhi High Court mentioning the reasons behind their decision. The DoE highlighted that two schools that are currently operating in the same building – Sarvodaya Kanya Vidyalaya and Sarvodaya Baal Vidyalaya- led to the surge in the student-classroom ratio. Since 2021 new school buildings are coming up in Khajoor Khas, Mustafabad and Johripur. “Moreover, the Department of Education has requested land allocation in Sonia Vihar, Badarpur Khadar, and Khajoori Khas from DDA. The department is presently awaiting a response,” stated the DoE
