As the world still grapples with the pandemic, the school education around the world has been adversely affected and disrupted due to the prolonged closures of educational institutions. This has resulted in huge learning loss, cancellation of exams and navigating from offline classes to hybrid learning. The pandemic has changed the way schools function causing major disruption in effective schooling.

Amid all this confusion, West Bengal government has decided to conduct open-air classes in schools so that students are no more deprived of education. A new scheme has been launched by the West Bengal education department called ‘Paray Sikshalay’ (neighbourhood school), which facilitates primary and pre-primary children of state-level schools to acquire lessons in open spaces.

According to official sources, under this new initiative, students will get opportunity to be back to offline classroom learning environment and the ventilated and open spaces will help them stay safe from getting infection due to closed and congested classrooms. Students’ education has already been jeopardised due to pandemic-induced closures imposed on schools.

As per the ministry sources, students will also be encouraged to take part in extra-curricular activities like debates, sketching and sports, which will be conducted in open grounds. This decision of the state government has come at a time when still some state governments are perplexed whether to open schools or keep them closed because a recent survey in Maharashtra has stated that 62 percent of parents are reluctant to send their children to school from January 24, as the state government decided to re-open schools.
