Whole child approach works! – Sonia Nagpal, Principal, Gitanjali Vedika School, Hyderabad, Telangana

by admin

Sonia is a goal-driven educator with two decades of experience in teaching and leading schools affiliated with CBSE, ICSE, and Cambridge Boards. Under her principal-ship, the school has been ranked as the “Best Emerging ICSE School”. She has also been a panelist and speaker at many prestigious conferences, panel discussions, and webinars. She advocates value-based learning by incorporating Indic ethos and teaching methods in modern pedagogy. She has pioneered several experiential and “Flipped Learning” initiatives, such as ‘learning speaking skills through podcast creation,’ that have been scaled across several schools.

As an educator, Sonia experimented and tried out ways that would motivate her students and make learning fun. These include creating various learning stations, giving brain breaks, providing hands-on experience, taking classes outside the four walls of a classroom, integrating art and music with the subjects, assigning collaborative work, and most importantly, giving voice and choice to her students.

Sonia has successfully brought in experiences for her students by high yielding interactions with scientists from Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) under the ‘Space On Wheels program’, personnel from Mahindra and Mahindra learning about the functioning of Electric Vehicles, scientists from Environmental Protection Training and Research Institute (EPTRI), scholars from Heartfulness, officers from Cyberabad Police, a leader from Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) and many others.

One factor which made a significant impact on her pupils’ efficacy and their academic achievement was her relationship with them. As an educator, she makes sure that she knows her students’ family background and their previous learning experiences. This not only helped her develop a stronger bond with her students and their families, but also plan and formulate pedagogies which boosted her students’ performances.

As a leader, Sonia understands that it is extremely important to have a personal connection with all the teachers and cultivate a healthy relationship with them. She believes in an open-door policy where any teacher can walk in and discuss personal and professional matters. Together, she and her teachers discuss, deliberate, and come out with the best possible solutions. She takes the time to know her teachers better and build a trusting association with them. This helps her identify their strengths and allocate duties and responsibilities which they enjoy rendering.

Sonia and her teachers work towards a common shared vision. They strongly believe in the “Whole Child Approach” and they design and deliver content keeping this purpose in mind. We devise activities that encourage creativity, promote independent thinking, sensitize them towards real-world problems, instill empathy, and make them adept and skilled.

The main component Sonia holds up in nurturing an all round child growth is their parents. She believes that parents are important partners in creating a happy, healthy, and progressive society. She spends a significant amount of time connecting and collaborating with parents to create learning experiences for students that will set them up for a successful lifetime.
