Why CBSE No Longer Releases Merit Lists for Board Exams

The decision aims to reduce academic pressure and foster healthy learning environments among students.

As the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) gears up to declare the results for the 2025 Class 10 and 12 board exams, one significant aspect remains unchanged—there will be no merit list or division-wise scores announced this year either.

CBSE has officially confirmed that it will continue with its recent practice of not publishing the list of toppers or categorizing results into divisions (such as first, second, or third). This decision, in place since the pandemic years, aims to discourage unhealthy academic competition and reduce the performance pressure on students.

What Prompted the Change?

The policy shift was initially introduced during the COVID-19 pandemic when the board opted for internal assessments and online exam-based evaluations. Since then, the board has upheld this approach, promoting a more inclusive and less pressurized academic environment.

CBSE maintains that academic success should be about overall learning and development, not just rankings and comparisons. By not highlighting individual scores or merit lists, the board hopes to shift the focus from competition to personal progress.

Result Timeline and Post-Result Options

While an official date has not yet been announced, based on past trends, the CBSE board results are expected to be declared by May 2025. In the previous years, results were announced on:

  • May 13, 2024
  • May 12, 2023
  • July 22, 2022
  • August 3, 2021
  • July 15, 2020

To pass, students must secure a minimum of 33% in each subject as well as overall.

After the result declaration, CBSE will offer supplementary exams for students who fail in any subject. Those dissatisfied with their marks can apply for verification or improvement exams.

The Class 10 exams were held from February 15 to March 18, 2025, while the Class 12 exams concluded on April 4, 2025.
