Migratory birds fly in flocks for thousands of kilometres from one climate region to another to survive the seasons. They fly from areas of low resources to high resources, to warm areas in winter and cooler areas in summer to survive in the wild. They find a suitable place where the weather is perfect, there is plenty of food, and their offspring can live safely from predators.
Every year, millions of birds migrate to India. India is a winter home for most Siberian birds such as Siberian Cranes, Greater Flamingo and Demoiselle Crane. Species such as white ibis, several species of egrets and herons, fly to Delhi from warmer climes. Odisha’s Chilka Lake is famous for being home to lakhs of migratory birds every year. In January 2023, about 10.93 lakh migratory birds were recorded. The ‘River Lapwing’ was spotted this year, and is said to have come back after a decade.
