Women are powerful agents of change

Women are powerful agents of change, and the far-reaching benefits of diversity and gender parity in leadership and decision-making are increasingly recognized in all spheres. Still, women continue to be vastly under-represented in decision-making in politics, businesses, and communities.

Globally, nearly seven in ten primary and five in ten secondary school teachers are female – but women remain underrepresented in school leadership. Female school leaders can create a safer, more positive learning environment for adolescent girls. Focus groups with girls in female led schools found that girls felt that female school leaders empower girls’, give self-confidence and build aspiration.

I have always tried to take everyone along and keep everyone’s opinion in consideration. I took over the reign of the School in 1994 as the Managing Director. Prita Lee Lesson School Kapurthala was established by my father, Sr Abnash Singh Ji in the revered memory of Miss Prita Takht Singh who herself was a living example of women empowerment. ‘Lee’ is a Latin word which means ‘gentle’ and ‘Lesson’ means ‘learning’. We, at Prita Lee ensure to provide value based education in a manner that all can gain the maximum out of our bare minimum contributions to the respectable profession of imparting education.

Gender Equality is something that I inherited from my forefather, Bhai Sahib Bhai Sahib Takhat Singh Ji, founder of Sikh Kanya Mahavidyalaya (first school for girls in Punjab), who was a firm believer in empowering women instead of protecting them and always fought for the cause against social stereotypes that hindered the women growth.

Formal education can address inequalities by providing equal access to quality education, combating gender bias and promoting gender-sensitive teaching. “If you educate a man, you educate an individual. But if you educate a woman, you educate a nation.” When girls are educated, their countries become stronger and more prosperous. The highest result of education is tolerance.”

Education is crucial for promoting gender equality by providing individuals with knowledge, skills and values to challenge gender stereotypes and promoting equal rights.
