A new robotics training programme has started for around 4.5 lakh Class 10 students in Kerala’s government and aided schools.
The initiative, rolled out by KITE, the technology arm of the general education department, marks a step in the state’s efforts to prepare students for a future shaped by technology and automation.
OBJECTIVES AND SIGNIFICANCE OF THE INITIATIVE
Officials see this as a significant development in Kerala’s public education system.
The training is to be completed in all schools by January 15, organised through the ‘Little KITES’ IT network, with students also taking on mentoring roles.
The hands-on approach is expected to help students prepare for the SSLC examinations by reinforcing topics from the updated IT textbook.
STRUCTURE OF THE ROBOTICS TRAINING PROGRAMME
The programme is structured into two sessions. The first session focuses on awareness, introducing robotics and its diverse applications.
Students learn about the essential parts of a robotic system: sensors for input, microcontrollers for processing, and actuators for output.
They also get hands-on familiarity with the main components of the KITE-provided kits, including the Arduino UNO board, breadboards, and LEDs.
The second session is devoted to practical exercises. Students use PictoBlox software for block-based coding, performing tasks like blinking LEDs and operating buzzers.
Workshops are conducted under the guidance of trained Little KITES members and mentors in each school. One robotic kit is shared among four or five students to maximise effective learning.
Schools without Little KITES units have been instructed to organise these camps with assistance from neighbouring units.
FOCUS ON HANDS–ON EXPERIENCE AND FUTURE READINESS
The project emphasises giving every student direct exposure to practical robotics, rather than just theoretical learning. It also aims to encourage interest in technology-based careers, given the growing relevance of robotics.
Officials say the use of high-tech labs and specialised equipment aims to make all Class 10 students proficient in modern technology, with an eye on future readiness and the increasing global importance of robotics.
