CBSE Introduces Digital Platform for Competency-Based Assessments in Schools

by Ranjith Subeditor

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) is set to make a significant leap in reshaping India’s school assessment system with the introduction of a cutting-edge digital platform. This platform will enable teachers at CBSE-affiliated schools to create high-quality, competency-based assessments, marking a pivotal moment in the country’s education reforms.

The initiative is a direct response to the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which advocates for a shift from traditional rote learning to an approach that measures real understanding and the practical application of knowledge. This platform is expected to play a crucial role in transforming how assessments are designed and conducted in schools.

The CBSE’s Approach to Competency-Based Assessments

As part of its ongoing efforts to overhaul the school education system, CBSE has already introduced several assessment reforms. These reforms aim to move away from exam-centric education and focus on competency-based evaluations that test a student’s ability to apply what they have learned.

For instance, the redesigned question papers for Classes 10 and 12 now feature 50% competency-based questions. Additionally, the Structured Assessment for Analysing Learning (SAFAL) programme is being implemented in foundational and middle school grades, assessing core concept understanding and real-life application.

The Role of the Digital Platform

The digital platform, currently in its request-for-proposal (RFP) stage, will serve as a centralised hub for the creation, review, and analysis of assessments. It will support teachers in designing both formative and summative evaluations aligned with defined learning outcomes.

Key features of the platform will include a central repository of question items categorised by grade, subject, and competency level. It will also offer tools for teachers to design custom assessments and integrate AI-powered quality analysis to ensure accuracy and relevance. Moreover, the platform will provide real-time tracking of assessment data, allowing for data-driven decision-making.

Empowering Teachers and Enhancing Student Learning

Through this platform, teachers in over 27,000 CBSE-affiliated schools will gain access to a national item bank. They will be able to create tailored assessments that reflect the true learning of students. The platform will also allow for contributions to the item bank, which will undergo a multi-layered review process before being made available for use.

By harnessing AI and machine learning, the platform will enable teachers to design assessments that focus on higher-order thinking skills like analysis and problem-solving, essential for preparing students for future challenges. It will also provide valuable insights into learning trends, helping to refine the quality of assessments and teaching strategies.

Transforming Education with Technology

This initiative aligns with the broader vision of NEP 2020, which aims to integrate technology into education and foster critical thinking among students. Education experts view the platform as a step forward in ensuring that assessments serve not just as a judgment of knowledge but as tools for learning and growth.

With this digital platform, the CBSE aims to set a national benchmark for competency-based learning, bringing together policy and practice in a seamless digital ecosystem.
