India observes National Mathematics Day every year on December 22 to commemorate the birth anniversary of Srinivasa Ramanujan, one of the country’s most celebrated mathematicians. The day serves not only as a tribute to Ramanujan’s extraordinary contributions to the field of mathematics but also as a reminder of the subject’s relevance far beyond textbooks and classrooms.

National Mathematics Day was officially declared by the Government of India in 2012, recognising Ramanujan’s lasting impact on mathematical theory and research. Despite having limited formal training, Ramanujan made groundbreaking contributions to number theory, infinite series and continued fractions, many of which continue to influence modern mathematics and scientific research.

While mathematics is often perceived as a challenging academic subject, its practical significance is deeply embedded in everyday life. From managing finances and calculating time to using digital technology and making informed decisions, mathematical thinking underpins routine activities. Logical reasoning, estimation and problem-solving—core mathematical skills—are essential tools in navigating both personal and professional spaces.

To mark the occasion, schools and colleges across the country organise a range of activities, including quizzes, workshops, lectures, exhibitions and mathematics-focused competitions. These initiatives aim to shift the perception of mathematics from rote memorisation of formulas to a subject rooted in reasoning, creativity and real-world application.

Educators also use the day as an opportunity to experiment with innovative teaching methods that make mathematics more engaging and accessible. By connecting concepts to everyday situations, teachers help students understand that mathematics is not confined to examinations but is a practical skill that shapes how the world functions.

National Mathematics Day ultimately celebrates both a legendary mathematician and the enduring importance of mathematical thinking. By revisiting Ramanujan’s legacy and encouraging curiosity-driven learning, the day inspires future generations to explore mathematics as a living, evolving discipline with limitless possibilities.
