Starting from the 2025–26 academic session, Vedic Mathematics will be integrated into NCERT mathematics textbooks for Classes 6 to 8 in Uttar Pradesh government schools, marking a significant curriculum reform aimed at enhancing students’ numerical abilities and reconnecting them with India’s traditional knowledge systems.
The decision aligns with the broader goals of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which promotes the inclusion of indigenous educational practices and local knowledge in mainstream curricula.
Why Vedic Mathematics?
Vedic Mathematics is a set of ancient Indian techniques known for enabling faster and simpler calculations. Developed from the 16 sutras and 13 sub-sutras compiled by Swami Bharati Krishna Tirtha Ji, this system emphasizes mental agility, logical reasoning, and conceptual clarity.
The Uttar Pradesh government aims to:
- Improve mathematical competency among middle school students
- Make mathematics less intimidating and more enjoyable
- Revive traditional Indian pedagogy in a modern academic setting
“This is more than just a calculation tool—it’s a cultural revival,” said Dr. R.K. Mishra, a senior educationist. He emphasized that Vedic Maths not only enhances speed and accuracy but also cultivates confidence in students who typically find the subject challenging.
Implementation Strategy
To facilitate a smooth transition:
- NCERT textbooks will be updated to include dedicated chapters on Vedic Mathematics.
- Special training sessions will be conducted for mathematics teachers to equip them with the necessary skills and understanding of Vedic techniques.
- The updated curriculum will be rolled out across all government schools under the supervision of the State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT), Uttar Pradesh.
The SCERT, while aligning with NCERT’s national framework, has the autonomy to introduce state-specific educational content. This move falls under the provision for local adaptation as encouraged by NEP 2020.
A Model for Other States?
This initiative could serve as a pilot project for other states exploring similar curriculum enhancements. The NEP allows flexibility for regional content integration, opening doors for broader implementation of Indian knowledge systems across the country.
If proven effective in Uttar Pradesh, the inclusion of Vedic Maths may inspire nationwide adoption, contributing to a curriculum that values both global competence and cultural heritage.
For now, all eyes are on how Uttar Pradesh executes this educational shift and whether Vedic Maths can deliver on its promise of transforming how students perceive and perform in mathematics.
