Reflections: Growth Through Learning and Experience

As every child is unique with various capabilities, so is each teacher. Being a teacher today, when I reflect on my childhood and school life, I recall my teachers, each with their own unique way of teaching and connecting with their students. Even after many years, we can still remember the special moments with our teachers when we talk about them with our batchmates. I fondly recall how we celebrated Teacher’s Day. As senior students were given the chance to take on the role of a teacher, I would always be so excited for that day. Today, I take pride in saying that my dream has come true.

Over the years of teaching, the experiences have been tremendous, both positive and challenging. Teaching is directly proportional to one’s own learning. It does not only involve knowledge of subjects but also the methods we use to make learning more engaging, the creativity we bring to the classroom, and how we adapt to meet students’ levels of understanding. Teaching is not just about what the teacher knows; it is about how effectively the teacher reaches the students.

When I reflect on my classes, I often consider the three Ws—What went well, What went wrong, and What could have been improved? If there is strong participation and response, I feel the class has gone well. However, if only the sharper students respond, or if there is no response at all, it clearly indicates that the teaching was not effective. In both cases, there is always the thought of what could have been done differently.

I can measure my own growth when I look back from where I began. The graph of my teaching journey shows a steady rise each year, which is undoubtedly the outcome of these experiences. This journey has not only shaped my teaching methods but has also deepened my quest for continuous learning.
