In an attempt to elevate hands-on learning and align with the latest educational frameworks, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has directed all affiliated schools to establish ‘Composite Skill Labs.’ This new initiative, detailed in an official notification, aims to address gaps in practical training and support the implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP) and the National Curriculum Framework for School Education (NCF-SE).
The decision was made during the 139th Governing Body meeting of CBSE, where concerns were raised about the inadequate facilities in many schools. The Board’s notification emphasises the need for these labs to provide effective, hands-on training, which is essential for a comprehensive educational experience.
Lab Specifications and Implementation
The CBSE has outlined specific guidelines for the establishment of these labs. Schools have two options:
1. One Composite Skill Lab – A single lab of 600 square feet catering to classes VI-XII.
2. Two Separate Labs – Two labs of 400 square feet each, one dedicated to classes VI-X and the other to classes XI-XII.
Implementation Timeline
For schools seeking fresh affiliation with CBSE, setting up a Composite Skill Lab with all required equipment and machinery is now a mandatory requirement. Schools already affiliated with CBSE have a three-year window to comply with this new directive.
Enhanced Skill Subject Offerings
In addition to the lab setup, the CBSE is urging schools to expand their curriculum by offering more Skill subjects. Schools currently providing Skill subjects are encouraged to increase the number of options available to students. For those not yet offering Skill subjects, the Board advises introducing at least one such subject to broaden students’ learning experiences.
